House sitter checklist

A good house sitter checklist answers questions before they come up, so the sitter does not have to message you on holiday to ask where the breaker panel is or which day recycling goes out.

Dates & contacts
The house

Saved you some time? Leave a tip, entirely optional.

SitterNotes reminds you of anything missing, from a local emergency contact to the water shut-off, and turns trash and recycling days into reminders on the right evenings of the stay.

    How to write sitter instructions

Start with the dates you are away and the people who matter: your phone number while travelling, a local emergency contact who can get to the house quickly, and your vet plus the nearest 24-hour emergency vet. Then describe the house: the address for deliveries and emergencies, Wi-Fi, keys and locks, the heating setting, trash and recycling days, and where the water shut-off valve and breaker panel are. These two locations are the ones most people forget and the ones a sitter needs most when something goes wrong.

Pets go one per line with vertical bars between name, species, food and amount, feeding times, medication and notes. Plants take a name, how often to water and an amount. Anything else that happens every day, such as bringing in the mail or opening the blinds, goes in the daily routine, and house rules cover everything from shoes off to keeping the dog off the sofa.

    The day-by-day checklist

SitterNotes combines everything into a checklist with a column for each day of the trip. Each feeding time gets its own row, so a sitter can see at a glance whether the evening meal was given. Dogs get a daily walk, cats get litter scooping, every pet gets fresh water, plants appear only on their watering days, and trash and recycling appear on the evening before collection. The first fourteen days are printed; for longer trips print a second copy after a fortnight.

    Before you leave

Walk through the sheet with your sitter in person, show them the shut-offs, and share any alarm or door codes by message rather than on paper. SitterNotes lists anything important that is still missing above the preview.

    Private by design

SitterNotes has no accounts and no server. Your sheet is saved in local storage on this device only and never uploaded.
